Smoothed Disparity Maps for Continuous American Sign Language Recognition

چکیده
For the recognition of continuous sign language we analyse whether we can improve the results by explicitly incorporating depth information. Accurate hand tracking for sign language recognition is made difficult by abrupt and fast changes in hand position and configuration, overlapping hands, or a hand signing in front of the face. In our system depth information is extracted using a stereo-vision method that considers the time axis by using preand succeeding frames. We demonstrate that depth information helps to disambiguate overlapping hands and thus to improve the tracking of the hands. However, the improved tracking has little influence on the final recognition results.

A Chinese sign language recognition system based on SOFM/SRN/HMM
In sign language recognition (SLR), the major challenges now are developing methods that solve signer-independent continuous sign problems. In this paper, SOFM/HMM is first presented for modeling signer-independent isolated signs. The proposed method uses the self-organizing feature maps (SOFM) as different signers’ feature extractor for continuous hidden Markov models (HMM) so as to transform ...
متن کاملAppearance-Based Features for Automatic Continuous Sign Language Recognition
This diploma thesis investigates appearance-based features for the person-independent vision-based recognition of continuous sign language. A large variety of methods which have been successfully used for automatic speech recognition is applied to this task. Appearance-based approaches do not rely on a segmentation of the images or on predefined models of the image content and use the image its...
متن کاملAn Integrated Tracking And Recognition Approach For Video
This diploma thesis investigates integrated tracking and recognition in continuous sign language recogntion as well as efficient approximations to it. Current state-of-the art sign language recognition system use tracking only as a preprocessing step. Hence, tracking errors lead to recognition errors. We propose to integrate scoring functions of a model-free dynamic programming tracking framewo...
متن کاملAutomated Speech Recognition Approach to Continuous Cue-symbols Generation
The work described in this paper is with an aim of developing a system to aid deaf-dumb people which translates the voice into sign language. This system translates speech signal to American Sign Language. Words that correspond to signs from the American sign language dictionary calls a prerecorded American sign language (ASL) showing the sign that is played on the monitor of a portable compute...
متن کاملReal-Time American Sign Language Recognition Using Desk and Wearable Computer Based Video
We present two real-time hidden Markov model-based systems for recognizing sentence-level continuous American Sign Language (ASL) using a single camera to track the user’s unadorned hands. The first system observes the user from a desk mounted camera and achieves 92% word accuracy. The second system mounts the camera in a cap worn by the user and achieves 98% accuracy (97% with an unrestricted ...
